Biman to sign multi-billion dollar deal with Airbus, buying 10 aircraft with deliveries starting 2031

- State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M. Rashiduzzaman Millat confirmed the Airbus purchase on July 21.
- The Airbus deal will include four A350 900 wide body aircraft and six A321neo narrow body aircraft, according to sources.
- Biman recently moved to acquire 14 aircraft from Boeing, including eight 787 10 Dreamliners, two 787 9 Dreamliners, and four 737 MAX 8 aircraft.
Why it Matters
Biman is moving from a Boeing dominated fleet to a mixed fleet at a time when it is planning a major expansion of its operations. The Airbus order, combined with the earlier $3.7 billion Boeing deal, would take Biman closer to its target of 43 aircraft in its future fleet, but the airline will still need leased aircraft before new jets arrive from 2031.
What We Think
Adding Airbus alongside Boeing could give Biman more flexibility, but buying more aircraft does not automatically solve its long standing challenges. With a larger and more complex fleet ahead, the real test will be whether Biman can build profitable routes, manage higher maintenance and training demands, and turn expansion plans into better connectivity and commercial returns.
