Why it Matters
Bangladesh’s nationwide internet shutdown during the July 2024 uprising was far larger and more severe. It showed how restrictions during unrest can disrupt reporting, payments and safety communication. Delhi’s reported disruption involved limited areas, but it raises the same need for authorities to disclose who ordered it, why it was imposed and how long it lasted.
What We Think
Internet shutdowns can become a tool for suppressing dissent by limiting communication, reporting and public visibility during protests. Delhi authorities should publish any suspension order and explain its legal basis, scope and duration.
