In a Nutshell

  • Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi said Bangladesh and India need continuous dialogue, mutual respect and trust to address bilateral issues.
  • Speaking at the Bay of Bengal Conversation in Dhaka on October 3, he said outstanding issues, including water, trade, culture, sports, communication and transportation, should be discussed through appropriate forums.
  • Trivedi said the engagement process between the two countries is ongoing, although progress may be slow.
  • He stressed that Bangladesh is an independent and sovereign country with the right to make its own decisions and protect its national interests.
  • He said India’s relationship with Bangladesh does not depend on Dhaka’s relations with other countries and highlighted the two countries’ shared cultural and historical ties.
  • Trivedi said disagreements between neighbouring democracies are natural and can be resolved through dialogue and consultation.
  • Trivedi’s remarks come amid months of diplomatic engagement aimed at improving ties, while key disagreements over sovereignty, water, trade and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina remain unresolved.

Context

Bangladesh-India relations have faced tension since the 2024 political shift and Sheikh Hasina’s departure to India. Dhaka has sought her extradition, while disagreements over water, border issues, and trade have continued. Since taking office, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s government has called for a relationship based on sovereign equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit.

Engagement in recent months has increased. Trivedi met Tarique Rahman and senior ministers in August, as both sides spoke of a “fresh start”. The envoy has since urged the countries to move beyond past differences, maintain people-to-people connections and keep trade and transport moving, and build trust. His latest remarks at the Bay of Bengal Conversation reiterate that dialogue remains ongoing, even as major issues remain unresolved.

Why It Matters

India and Bangladesh are linked through vital partnerships in trade, energy, transport and regional security and issues such as water-sharing, border management, visa access and cross-border connectivity directly affect people and businesses in both countries.

Trivedi’s emphasis on Bangladesh’s sovereignty is particularly important for its trade and economic growth, as Dhaka seeks to maintain relations with multiple regional and global partners while protecting its core financial interests. Now ensuring a stable economic partnership does not require the two countries to agree on every issue, rather, it demands that political or policy disagreements are never allowed to hamper commercial ties, and that any disagreement is addressed through credible channels with strict respect for each other’s sovereign decisions.

What We Think

Economic growth and strong trade ties are important for Bangladesh at this point. However, it is also important to note that, talking about a fresh start on India’s behalf is a political figure instead of a career diplomat. Moreover, tension will persist until important issues, including the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and justice for Osman Hadi’s murder are addressed.
