In a Nutshell:

  • Bir Uttam recipients will receive a monthly honorarium of Tk30,000 under the revised rates.
  • Families of martyred freedom fighters will receive Tk23,000 as monthly honorarium along with revised allowances.
  • War wounded freedom fighters will receive monthly benefits ranging from Tk20,000 to Tk30,000 based on disability category.

Why it Matters

The new allowance rates come after a recent debate over how freedom fighters should receive a level of state recognition above other groups receiving state support. In June, Kishoreganj-4 BNP MP and freedom fighter Fazlur Rahman argued in Parliament that freedom fighters’ allowances should remain higher because of the Liberation War’s significance. The government’s revised rates now increase payments for freedom fighters and their families, while keeping separate benefit structures based on categories of service and sacrifice.

What We Think

Freedom fighters’ contributions to Bangladesh’s history are not in question, but discussions around allowances should go beyond political arguments over recognition. The government should clearly explain how these benefits are decided and ensure support reaches the people it is meant for. As different categories receive different levels of support, the criteria behind those decisions should remain clear and consistent.
