In a Nutshell:

  • Individual and Hindu Undivided Family taxpayers filing returns between 1 July and 30 September can receive a rebate equal to 5 percent of payable tax, up to Tk25,000.
  • No rebate will be available for returns filed from 1 October to 31 December.
  • Returns filed from January onward will face additional tax under the Income Tax Act 2023, while the NBR says its online filing system is now available with digital payment options.

Why it matters

The rebate is designed to encourage taxpayers to file returns earlier by rewarding timely compliance and increasing the financial cost of delaying. At the same time, NBR is pairing the incentive with its expanded e-Return system, allowing taxpayers to file online, pay through digital platforms and instantly receive tax documents. If more people file before the September deadline, it could spread tax submissions more evenly across the year, improve voluntary compliance and make tax administration more efficient.

What we think

The rebate is likely to encourage some taxpayers to file earlier, but it is not a substitute for a tax system that people find straightforward and reliable. If filing becomes easier year after year, early compliance can become a habit rather than a response to a temporary financial incentive.
