3 teachers suspended after DU reviews all teacher appointments made under Awami govt

Why it Matters
Nearly two years after the July Uprising, DU is finally reviewing teachers accused of opposing students during the movement. But why did it take a change in government for this process to begin? The move could lead other public universities to review their own appointments. If politically influenced appointments were a problem under the Awami League, what has changed when 19 of 20 newly appointed public university vice chancellors have been reported to have links with BNP aligned teacher politics?
What We Think
DU’s review should not only look at what happened under the Awami League, but whether the way universities are run has really changed. If political connections and influence continue to shape teacher and Vice Chancellor appointments under BNP, then the concern is that power has merely changed hands while keeping the same rigged system in place.
