In a Nutshell:
- BFIU head announced Tk76,000 crore in frozen assets
- Cases involve Hasina, her family and 10 groups including S Alam, Beximco & Bashundhara
- BFIU head said agency freezes accounts based only on suspicion, not politics
Why it Matters
This is one of the largest asset freezes tied to a single leader in Bangladesh's history. Beximco and Bashundhara face similar accusations, cases opening only after Hasina's fall in August 2024. BFIU's claim that interim government members could be exposed will test whether accountability applies equally to everyone.
What We Think
The cases follow a similar script. Loans get inflated, exports get used to move money abroad, and family members buy foreign citizenship as funds leave the country. This same pattern repeating across different groups points to a bigger system failure. It also has real victims. Thousands of Beximco garment workers went unpaid, proof these cases hurt real people, not just numbers on paper.
