Johnson & Johnson offers $5.5bn to settle U.S. lawsuits alleging talc-linked ovarian cancer

Why it Matters
J&J may finally be reaching the end of a legal fight that has followed it for more than a decade, but the path here has been anything but simple. The company spent years pushing back against the claims, including three failed attempts to use bankruptcy through a subsidiary to deal with the lawsuits. While the settlement could give many US claimants closure, it leaves thousands of women pursuing ovarian cancer claims elsewhere, such as more than 7,000 potential claimants in the UK, still waiting for their day in court.
What We Think
The deal may resolve tens of thousands of US cases, but leaving out thousands of claimants outside the US shows that the legal fight is far from over for everyone involved. A settlement that closes one chapter for the company still leaves a difficult question open: how will the remaining claimants get their cases heard and resolved?
